November 9, 2007 |
Pacifica, CA: Home again. Home Sweet Home again. |
November 8, 2007 |
La Selva Beach: Back on highway one and off towards the water again. We found a KOA to spend the last night of the trip. What a trip! Tens of thousands of pictures and many more memories. |
November 7, 2007 |
Pismo Beach, CA: The weather warmed a bit so we are off to the coast to drive HWY 1 or PCH as it is called in the Southland. Found a great RV park right on the water with a view of the lagoon. So many birds; gulls, pelicans, egrets, ducks, herons, sand pipers - so many. Beautiful sunset: we saw another green flash! Number 6 for us. Hate to leave but the rain forecast pushes us along. So we make a note and think we will come back again. |
November 6, 2007 |
Santa Paula, CA: After the noise of the last trailer park plus the drive through the LA basin we decided to find a quiet place. We were a bit worried about the weather; very windy and cold on the coast. So we went inland and found the Far West Trailer Park. So quiet and so rural, near Ojai. Peacocks, quail and coyotes. But we only stayed one night as we again were worried abou the weather. Seems there is some rain predicted and we want to get home and put the trailer away while it is still dry. |
November 5, 2007 |
Victorville, CA: Well what to say after the beauty of the Mojave. Victorville is still the Mojave but with humans. And human noise and we are in a trailer park right next to I40. Lots of noise. But we did manage to find the Victorville Route 66 Museum and it was fabulous. All volunteer and very interesting. Lots of information about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans here in Victorville. But really the height of the trip to Victorville included a lunch at Marie Callendars. I didn't realize the toll that eating only iceberg lettuce or black slimy "fresh greens" throughout the country* took on me. I opened the menu to discover a fresh salad with gorgonzola cheese, pecans, pears and balsamic vinaigrette dressing and burst into tears! * (exception taken during our time with Jack's sister and niece's) |
November 4, 2007 |
Mojave National Preserve: Wow! So beautiful and so quiet. Staying in National Parks is so wonderful. We went to the Visitor Center and the volunteer there told us so much about the preserve and what to see. We only stayed one night but managed a hike throught the eye of the canyon with the help of metal rings cemented into the walls. Trixie was a bit reticent, but finally made it. Just a beautiful sunset and sunrise the next day. On the way to Mojave we drove through Oatman on the old route 66 in Arizona and saw the tame burros that just wander the streets of an almost ghost town since the building of Interstate 40. |
November 3, 2007 |
California, here we come: We should be home in about a week. We are planning continuing Route 66 through Barstow, San Bernadino and finally to Santa Monica. We should be home in about a week. I cannot wait. I miss the Pacific so much! It has been a great trip, but I want to do laundry without quarters and take a shower without wearing flip flaps. To say nothing about my garden... |
November 2, 2007 |
Kingman, AZ: We left the Meteor Crater and headed for Kingman along Route 66. Ate at another 66 diner along the way in Williams, AZ. Then we toured another 66 museum in Kingman. Ask me questions about Route 66. |
November 1, 2007 |
Meteor Crater, AZ: Pulled into the Meteor Crater KOA which is actually part of Meteor Crater Natural Monument. We just stayed one night. Still no stove so dinner was a bit iffy. The only restaurant for miles and miles are two Subways. And they close at 5:30. But early November 2 I stopped by the office and found that they had an omelet sandwich! So a warm breakfast in a cold climate. |
October 30, 2007 |
Holbrook, AZ: We traveled along Route 66 for some of the way when it veered off I40 and stayed here two nights. Toured the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest. Beautiful. Took pictures in town of the TeePee Motel where travelers could stay in a "real" teepee complete with bathroom and indoor plumbing. Ha! We thought we had a propane leak in the stove so no cooking for a couple of days until we can get to Flagstaff and an RV service center. |
October 29, 2007 |
Albuquerque, AZ: On our way out of Espanola we stopped at Bandelier National to see the cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people. A great park with an old lodge that is now a restaurant, visiter center and gift shop. We stayed at a trailer park for just one night as it was very cold. There was a road runner in our camp! Beep Beep. ![]() |
| Ghost Ranch, NM: A fabulous workshop for me. The setting was gorgeous and the workshop was very inspiring, informative and will be useful for our new Photography degree and certificate program at CaƱada. It was taught by Eddie Soloway, a wonderful landscape photographer and great teacher. His website is: www.eddiesoloway.com | |
October 23, 2007 |
Espanola, NM: A day before my workshop at Ghost Ranch. We discovered that there is a problem with the trailer's electricity. Big problem as it is freezing at night and the heater is needed to keep the hoses from bursting. So we find a part at the local WalMart. Yup, we tried to find the part elsewhere, but Walmart had it. Jack ordered the real part from a dealer in Indiana and that should arrive tomorrow. |
October 21, 2007 |
Santa Rosa, NM: Instead of Tucumcari we stayed in Santa Rosa. |
October 19, 2007 |
Amarillo, TX: Another KOA and a great ride on 66 to get here. The next day we went to the Palo Duro outside Amarillo. It is the second largest canyon in the country. Beautiful colors and vistas and history of the pioneers and native americans. Same old story it seems. Tomorrow we leave for Tucumcari, NM. But before we leave Amarillo we will see the Cadillac Ranch. |
